"What would a child learn sooner than a song ?"
Alexander Pope
established in 1984, is an author and ASCAP songwriter who teaches piano, voice instruction and coaching. Cheryl produces, directs and rehearses all the company shows. She provides her students a stage to perform and hone their newly found skills. It is most important to have a short-term goal that will speed up and enhance the learning process.
One of Cheryl’s long time mentors, Ann Ruckert taught her to seize the moment and always say yes to a good opportunity. She also said, “Surround yourself with people who are successfully doing what you want to do.”
Cheryl studied voice with many prominent teachers that resulted in a fair amount of information exchange. But, it wasn’t until she started working with Patricia Carey, did she truly begin to find her voice.
“Patricia’s approach was professional, patient, and organically perfect. She obviously knew how to sing and she knew how to transform a voice”, she states. Cheryl studied with many teachers who could explain the scientific process of singing. Cheryl recalls, “It was definitely cookie cutter information, that may work to an extent, for some people. Patricia never once used those scientific terms in her lessons; instead it was a combination of her exercises and prompting, all tailored to my needs in the moment. With her nurturing and sincere presence I learned how to truly sing out and believe in herself.
While Mariah Carey was establishing herself as a Multi -platinum artist, her mom, Patricia Carey was instructing Cheryl vocally, coaching her songwriting, her music production and advising Cheryl with an artistic development plan. Cheryl fondly recalls, “Patricia Carey was by far the most knowledgeable, nurturing and giving teacher I have ever come in contact with. She believed in my music and encouraged me.
"I recall this example because I am forever grateful for all she has given me. When I teach, I assess, create, and move forward with the best plan to suite the students needs in that moment. In those treasured lessons, the time I got to spend with Patricia, I learned excellence and a behind the scenes truth I call, “Real Musical Knowledge” that I carry with me and pass on in one form or another to all the students I work with.
Cheryl has written and published, “The Gamut Of Scales And Chords In The Major Keys” with an instructional DVD. She has also converted the same workbook into college textbook form. Along with some commercial singing for WBLI and a Kmart commercial in the late 90’s Cheryl landed a small independent record deal. Her song Rejoice is featured on an eclectic holiday CD and was handed out to every Grammy executive in a special release. This same song was considered for the Radio City Christmas Show.
Cheryl abandoned her songwriting career with the birth of her child in 2001. The teaching studio, production of shows and raising a family provided more than enough activity…………. until recently.
With an innocent X-factor audition, singing her own original songs Cheryl progressed through all the levels of competition, all the way to the door of the show. This experience alone has caused a musical revival in her career. With all the new technology both in the studio and social media, it is much easier to create and promote music.
Since 2015 Cheryl has been studying voice with Chanelle Guyton certified by Brett Manning and has been coached by Brett Manning, one of the music industry’s most sought after vocal coaches. This has been an exciting journey working diligently to expand the range and color options of the voice. When recording a CD you absolutely need a vocal coach.

Kimberly Hellerman
teacher
Kimberly Hellerman is a most treasured alumna of Standing Ovation Music Lessons. When searching for someone to teach new students who come to my studio it is absolutely essential that they teach my method. I need an exact clone of what I have successfully done all these years. I could only work with someone
who knows my technique, the way I present information; the goals I set and achieve each season. It is my promise to give each student a solid musical foundation and build dynamic performance skills.
Kimberly studied with me for 9 years. Within her 1st year of study, it became evident that she had a gift. Kimberly participated in countless recitals and NYSSMA of course! She was the main piano accompanist for band and orchestra throughout her grade school years. She started performing advanced showcase pieces at her church at a very young age and continues still to this day.
Kimberly has witnessed first hand the joy and fulfillment one experiences from adding music into the, “Mix Of Life!”
She did go on to study music in college as a piano major; and did end up graduating with a Bachelors degree in psychology. Kimberly is quite knowledgeable of the way children learn, develop and apply knowledge in their lives. I am honored to say that for the past 15 years, Cheryl has been a teacher, mentor and confidant of mine who has become a very close friend. Without the influence that she has had in my life, I would not be the person I am today!
Lastly at the tender age of 12, I began caring for Cheryl’s infant daughter, Sarah-Anne, while Cheryl taught lessons to other children in her home. Not only were those precious years that I got to bond with Cheryl and Sarah-Anne; but I also learned how fulfilling it is to be such an integral part of the life development and education of a child. I know that once a successful bond between a teacher and a student is created that relationship will never be forgotten. We cherish those who have the greatest impact on our lives. To me, Cheryl is that teacher!”
James has been a percussionist for the majority of his lifetime.
At age 10 he started playing snare drum in marching bands.
A native Long Islander, James was given his first drumset as a present from his parents on his 14th birthday. The following week, he put together a band with a few neighborhood kids and James has not stopped playing since.
Mr Benard believes in incorporating varied aspects of musicianship into his drum teaching.
The drumset is, of course, in the family of percussion instruments, and this family is huge and widely varied from primitive shakers and frame drums to mallet keyboards and our modern piano.
There are a myriad of different angles of approach to teaching drums, so he likes to mix some music theory in with various technical exercises, which then can be very practically applied to modern drumset playing.
James is also a perpetual student of different ethnic styles on drums, so he incorporates them into his lessons.
The bottom line is to keep it challenging and fun for students while laying in a good musical foundation.
James studied with many local N.Y. drum teachers while in High School.
Then he had the good fortune
to study with drum greats
Jack DeJohnette and Tony Williams.
He continued with his formal musical education at the University of Miami, in Florida, with a major in Applied Percussion and Studio Music and Jazz.
During and after college James worked as a percussionist throughout South Florida and in the Caribbean.
James is now back in the New York, Tri-State area where He continues to perform and teach.
Standing Ovation Music is thrilled to have James Benard here at the studio. James is IN THE HOUSE!
James is also a well known session player in Eastern Long Island
